RE ACT
Thursday, December 9, 2010
On the 6th to 8th of December, a small group of Nanyang Junior College AEP friends (Adrian, Wen Han, Wilmer, Jun Kai, Ernie) and I attended an Architecture Design workshop (Design my Place), organised by Reallyarchitecture. I guess some of you might wonder why would I join such a course especially when I didn't even have the interest in Architecture design. Well, the reasons were pretty simple:
1. I wanted this workshop to be an eye-opener for me to know more about architecture design (who knows? I might fall in love with it and take architecture as my Uni course!)
2. My dream is to have my own Art Company, so i thought perhaps I could use this chance to learn about Architect drawings so I can design my own company building!
Students from Secondary Schools to Junior Colleges (St. Andrew Junior College, Temasek Junior College, Duman High School, Nan Chiau High, Raffles Girls.. etc) Like any workshops or camps, we had a brief introduction of ourselves through ice breaker games. There were groups names like 'Dove', 'Lion', 'Panda', 'Platypus', 'Horse' written on pieces of papers and were scattered on the floor. We were then told to form groups by rushing to the group name that best represents ourselves.. & obviously, their plan failed. One of the funny moments of that day I could remember was Mr Joshua Teo (Vice President of the Organisation) spelled 'Platypus' as 'Palatypus' and became the butt of the joke for NY people.
Introducing you to my group members (THE PLATYPUSER!?):

The purpose of that workshop was rather different from what i thought it was; it's about Urban Planning where creativity comes in and play a part in improving and solving face by the residents. On that day, we went to Joo Chiat Area to interview the residents/Shop Owners/Tourists. After having lunch at Astons, we went back to Research@Eastzone (TJC) to begin our project. Another small activity (making 30 changes on ourselves and got our partner to point out those changes) was held in the late afternoon where we learned that when making changes, we have to be aware of our surroundings as we need not just use materials on ourselves, but also objects around us.
Second Day was a little more fun when we got to build models and used other materials such such as pins and strings to illustrate our plan. However it was sprinkled with a little unhappiness as there was dispute among us. (Details shall not be revealed)
Third Day (last day) MOST EXCITING DAY! That was the day where we rushed everything out (from models to write up to draft for final presentation). Spent most of the time discussing with Wilmer about his idea of the Culture Pavilion.
Culture Pavilion
Did section drawing (I did 3 drafts!!) while plan drawing was done by facilitator.

PRESENTATION TIME:

All in all, I find this workshop suitable for students who wish to take Architecture as their course in University/Polytechnic. However I thought that the duration should be shorter (it's 8.30am to 7pm plus for the first 2 days!- I swear I was tired out & couldn't process whatever information that was given to me after 5pm everyday)
PS: Special thanks to Por Liang (our facilitator) and Bin (interior Designer) who gave us the idea of cycling to the back alleys of Joo Chiat which makes our idea implementable and successful.
Shall end off with a NANYANG GROUP PHOTO! ;)
